Chapter 757 Observation
Chapter 757 Observation
It not only concerns the dynamics of Konoha's high command, but could even influence the future political landscape. Mabui highlighted this point heavily on the scroll, believing this deal had already yielded a fortune on its very first day. She knew this intelligence would be enough to impress the Raikage with her mission.
The morning mist hadn't completely dissipated, and the air was filled with the damp scent of earth. At the doorway of Mabuyi's room, a figure stood like a statue. Zhang Hai was covered in dew, his clothes slightly damp, clearly having waited there for a long time. But his face showed no sign of fatigue; instead, it wore his usual gentle smile.
The barrier slowly dissipated, and the door creaked open. Mabuyi had already tidied everything up and stepped out of the room. When she saw Zhang Hai standing outside, a complex emotion welled up in her heart. His almost obsessive waiting surprised her and even stirred a feeling of indescribable emotion within her.
"How long have you been waiting?" Mabuyi asked softly, her voice carrying a gentleness she herself was unaware of.
Zhang Hai smiled and shook his head, dew dripping from his hair, shimmering in the morning light. "Soon, Miss Mabuyi," he replied gently, then pointed to a path not far away, "I made you breakfast, let's eat together."
Mabuyi's heart skipped a beat, and a rare, natural smile appeared on her face. "Okay."
Mabuyi followed Zhang Hai through several paths to a picturesque courtyard. In the center of the courtyard stood a large wooden table, laden with a dazzling array of breakfast items: steaming noodles, fragrant porridge, golden and crispy pancakes, delicate rice balls, tempting sushi, fresh milk, and fruit. The variety and abundance far exceeded Mabuyi's expectations.
"You...did you make all of this?" Mabuyi asked in surprise, her gaze sweeping over everything on the table, a profound shock washing over her. This was no breakfast; it was a veritable feast.
Zhang Hai shook his head, a hint of apology on his face. "Not entirely. Some of it I made, and some I bought." He pointed to several items of food. "Because I didn't know what you liked to eat, I prepared a little extra."
Mabui frowned slightly as she looked at the mountain of food before her. Coming from Kumogakure, she knew all too well the preciousness of resources during wartime, especially food. This extravagance made her somewhat uncomfortable. She casually picked up two rice balls, placed them on her plate, and said, "This is enough. Food is so precious during wartime; this is too wasteful."
Zhang Hai, however, didn't seem to care; he maintained his charming smile. "Nothing was wasted," he winked mysteriously, then clapped his hands.
As his applause rang out, a group of lively children suddenly ran out from the bushes and corners of the houses around the courtyard. They were all simply dressed, but their eyes gleamed with longing for food, some even swallowing hard. They had clearly been summoned by Zhang Hai and were now staring curiously at the food on the table.
"Everyone's waiting for Miss Mabuyi," Zhang Hai said with a smile, waving to the children. "Go on, kids, dinner's ready!"
Upon hearing this, the children cheered and rushed to the large table, eagerly choosing their favorite food. They jostled and jostled, yet maintained a childlike order. Soon, the entire courtyard was filled with the children's laughter and the aroma of food.
Looking at the lively scene before her, Mabuyi felt a mix of emotions. She had never imagined that this man, whom she saw as dangerous and calculating, would arrange all of this so meticulously. Seeing the children's satisfied smiles and their appreciation for the food, Mabuyi felt a warm current surge through her heart. The rice ball in her hand seemed to have become heavier at that moment.
She had thought she knew Bai Yun well enough, but this scene made her realize how one-sided her previous judgment had been. This man wasn't just a dark figure; there seemed to be something within him—something she had never explored before—pure and warm. A sense of shame rose within her, and she felt that her understanding of Zhang Hai had deepened even further.
After breakfast, the children played happily in the yard. Mabuyi and Zhang Haize went to a large tree in the center of the yard. The swaying shade and gentle breeze added to the tranquility of the afternoon.
Zhang Hai took out a set of shogi from the house and placed it on the stone table between the two. They sat facing each other, the black and white pieces arranged neatly in the center of the board. Mabuyi was meticulous and methodical, her moves as cautious and precise as her style on the battlefield. Zhang Hai, on the other hand, played with unrestrained imagination and unconventional tactics, often making unexpected and brilliant moves that were impossible to defend against.
For a moment, only the crisp sound of chess pieces hitting the board echoed in the courtyard. Both men were completely absorbed, as if the entire world had shrunk to the game before them. Time passed silently, and the midday sun filtered through the leaves, dappling the chessboard and their pensive faces. It was a contest of wits and strategy, a silent exchange.
Night fell, enveloping Konoha Village in an unprecedented tranquility. However, deep within Mabui's heart, this tranquility was shattered by an indescribable unease. She sat alone in her room, the protective barrier still surrounding her, but at this moment, that sense of security felt so fragile.
Two days passed in the blink of an eye. As Mabuyi reflected on her time with Zhang Hai, her doubts and wariness grew stronger. Zhang Hai's behavior was flawless: polite and never overstepping his bounds; his responses to her probing questions, no matter how tricky or subtle, were always perfectly timed, neither concealing nor elaborating, as if everything was under his control; most perplexingly, no matter how she tested him, he never showed the slightest displeasure or anger.
This "perfection" made Mabui feel more uneasy than ever before. She had seen all kinds of ninjas and dealt with all sorts of cunning opponents, but she had never encountered someone as flawless as Zhang Hai. He was like a meticulously designed program, every reaction calculated precisely, making it impossible for anyone to guess his true intentions.
Mabui even noticed that in the past two days, she and Zhang Hai had reached a tacit "balance." She no longer brought up the matter of him returning to Yunyin Village, and Zhang Hai did not try to entice her further. They were more like waging a psychological war without gunfire, testing and observing each other.
