Chapter 2: Deciding to Change Fate
Chapter 2: Deciding to Change Fate
Li Yuan felt like she was dreaming. The delivery room in front of her was familiar yet somewhat blurry. The waves of pain in her abdomen instantly woke her up. She had actually been reborn on the day she was giving birth to her daughter!
Before she could recover from the shock, her husband Wang Qiang and mother-in-law rushed in.
The mother-in-law's eyes were like an eagle eyeing its prey. As soon as she came in, she went straight to the child. When she saw that it was a girl, her face fell instantly. She muttered, "How come it's a little girl? What are we going to do?"
Wang Qiang also looked disappointed, his expression like someone who had won the lottery but found it was worthless.
Looking at the two men's faces, Li Yuan felt a surge of anger. She had long been fed up with this family's preference for sons over daughters. In her previous life, she had endured humiliation for the sake of her family and her daughter, only to end up with a tragic fate. In this life, she would not be foolish again.
Li Yuan took a deep breath, looked at Wang Qiang, and said calmly, "Wang Qiang, let's get a divorce."
Wang Qiang laughed as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world: "Haha, Li Yuan, have you gone stupid from having a baby? Who would want you if you left me? Look at you, you're just a haggard old woman now, with a child to support you."
Li Yuan sneered, "Wang Qiang, don't take yourself too seriously. Leaving you is like escaping from a sea of suffering for me. Someone like you, I don't even want you."
Upon hearing this, the mother-in-law jumped up and shouted, "You ungrateful woman! What's wrong with my son? If it weren't for the fact that you can carry on the Wang family line, would I have married you?"
Li Yuan rolled her eyes at her mother-in-law: "Carry on the family line? I've had enough of your patriarchal thinking. What's wrong with girls? Aren't girls people too? Let me tell you, my daughter doesn't have the surname Wang, she has the surname Li."
Wang Qiang's eyes widened: "What did you say? Are you crazy?! Since ancient times, children have taken their father's surname. Are you trying to rebel?"
Li Yuan sat up straight, ignoring the pain from her wound: "What do you mean by 'since ancient times'? That's all outdated feudal thinking. My daughter can have whatever surname I want. I don't want her growing up in a family like yours that discriminates against women."
The mother-in-law stomped her feet in anger: "You're trying to cut off the Wang family line! You vicious woman!"
Li Yuan laughed: "Roots? All you care about are roots. Have you ever thought about the children's happiness? Your kind of thinking is the real cancer."
Wang Qiang sneered: "Hmph, Li Yuan, do you think divorce is so easy? You have no job, no income, how will you live without me? And this child, do you think you can support her?"
Li Yuan looked at him disdainfully: "Wang Qiang, you underestimate me. I gave up my career for this family, not because I'm incapable. Let me tell you, I will find a good job, raise our daughter well, and make her a hundred times happier than she is with you."
Just then, a nurse came in and frowned when she saw the tense atmosphere in the ward: "Keep your voices down. This is a hospital. The mother needs to rest."
The mother-in-law wanted to say something more, but was glared at by the nurse and had no choice but to shut up.
Wang Qiang persisted: "Li Yuan, think it over carefully. You're acting impulsively. After so many years of relationship, you're going to divorce me just because of a child's surname?"
Li Yuan looked at him: "Feelings? What feelings do you have for me? How have you and your mother treated me since I got pregnant? I've had enough of your cold looks and discrimination. This isn't an impulsive decision; it's a well-thought-out one."
After a while, Li Yuan added, "Also, my parents paid for most of the money to buy this house. After the divorce, you will have to move out."
Upon hearing this, Wang Qiang became agitated: "What? This house is our wedding home, why should we move out?"
Li Yuan snorted: "Why should I? It's because my parents bought this house, and you only paid for the renovations, yet you're always showing off like this."
The mother-in-law tugged at Wang Qiang's arm, saying, "Son, we can't move it! We can't let this woman get away with it."
Li Yuan found this ridiculous scene amusing: "I'm getting off easy? Haven't I sacrificed enough for this family over the years? I've taken care of everything you eat and use. And now you're saying I'm getting off easy?"
Wang Qiang's face turned red with anger: "Li Yuan, don't go too far. See you in court."
Li Yuan nodded: "Fine, see you in court then. Do you think I'm afraid of you?"
Then Wang Qiang and his mother-in-law went out.
"Mom, I want to divorce Wang Qiang. Then I will fight for our daughter and the house in court. I'll go home in a few days. I want to change our daughter's surname to Li. I want to work at Dad's company and be the president." Li Yuan took out her phone and answered the call, her tone firm but tinged with exhaustion.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone before my mother said gently, "Okay, daughter, I'll go talk to your father."
Li Yuan took a deep breath and said, "Mom, I've really thought this through this time. I've suffered enough in that family all these years. Wang Qiang doesn't understand me at all. Our lives are like two parallel lines, seemingly together, but drifting further and further apart."
My mother said with heartache, "My child, you've suffered so much. You should have made this decision sooner. I've been worried about you all this time. Now that you've decided to come back, change your surname, and join the company, your parents support you. You are our pride, and no matter what decision you make, we'll always be there for you."
“Mom, I’ve actually hesitated for a long time. But for my daughter’s sake, I can’t go on like this. I want to give her a better life and not let her grow up in a loveless family environment. Changing her surname to Li is to help her completely break away from the past and start a new life. And I know that Dad’s company has always been his life’s work, and I want to share his burden.” Li Yuan’s eyes shone with a light, a light of anticipation and determination for the future.
“Daughter, it’s good that you have this thought. Your father has always hoped that you could come back and help. The company has developed well over the years, but it is also facing new challenges. With you here, we are all at ease. After you come back, take a good rest for a while, adjust yourself, and then throw yourself into your work. As for changing your surname, do as you wish; it is your right as a mother.” Mom’s voice was full of relief.
"Yes, Mom. I'm already looking forward to a new life. I want to raise my daughter to be an independent and confident person, and I also want to achieve something great at my company. This divorce isn't a failure for me, but rather the starting point for a fresh start." Li Yuan felt the gloom in her heart gradually dissipating, and the road ahead seemed to be becoming clearer. She knew that there might be many difficulties in the future, but with the support of her family, she was fearless.
"Okay, daughter. Come back as soon as you've packed up in the next few days. Everyone at home is waiting for you." Her mother's words were like the warm sun in winter, warming Li Yuan's heart and filling her with strength.
A few days later, Li Yuan was discharged from the hospital and returned home. Wang Qiang and his mother-in-law, however, remained at home, refusing to leave.
Li Yuan packed up their luggage and threw it at the door: "You can leave now, don't wait until I call the police."
Wang Qiang glared at her: "You dare!"
Li Yuan took out her phone: "Do you think I dare?"
Seeing this, the mother-in-law pulled Wang Qiang and said, "Son, let's go first. A wise man doesn't fight a losing battle."
Wang Qiang, feeling helpless, glared fiercely at Li Yuan and left with his mother-in-law.
Li Yuan watched their departing figures, feeling a sense of relief. She hugged her daughter and kissed her, saying, "Baby, from now on it's just the two of us. Don't worry, Mommy will give you the best life."
The daughter seemed to sense her mother's love, waving her little hands and babbling.
