Chapter 208: Don’t mess with a Field Guide’s job
Chapter 208: Don’t mess with a Field Guide’s job
They decided that with everything that was going on, they would call it a day for meetings. Kellen was fine continuing, but it was the Espers who were shaken. Even Brent was surprised by Kellen’s vision.
Sergei, the sweet man, was helping Brent recover, being sweet and docile and offering a safe arm to nuzzle himself into. Sergei offered, but it was clear from the slightly dazed expression on his face that he hadn’t expected Brent to actually take him up on it.
Brent did, and Sergei looked like a cat who had gotten the cream and had no idea what to do next.
Kellen was a little disappointed that they weren’t hammering out more details for their future plans, but his Aunt Dina seemed like she needed it. Kellen had forgotten for a moment that her partner had been assassinated, so seeing Kellen go down like he had, had been triggering for her.
Kellen wasn’t aware of it until he came down the stairs that she’d had a panic attack. His Dad was supporting her, her Lieutenants also keeping an eye on her and offering her whatever she needed.
Kellen felt terrible upon realising that, and very proud of her for handling it so well. She was waving off everyone’s concern even as her face was pale and her breathing laboured. She kept waving everyone off, even Kellen when he came back downstairs. She clearly didn’t want to appear that she’d had a moment, but she did accept calling it a night when his Dad suggested it.
So as much as Kellen was bummed, he didn’t hold it against anyone. Instead, he had Uncle Parker lead Rhys, Kellen and Sergei to their rooms. Uncle Parker made it very clear that he had arranged the room and board for them and that Kellen and Rhys were as far from others as they could manage.
He was apologetic about it, same with Sergei, but with so many S Classes around, there was only so much that they could do. Especially since it seemed that they were going to host a few more S Classes that were coming in for the meeting.
That was the first time that Kellen heard about that, but Rhys didn’t seem surprised nor did Sergei. Kellen realised he shouldn’t be surprised. It wasn’t like his Aunt Dina was new to the S Class field. She just chose not to get retested so that she had to follow the specific international standards that plagued S Class Espers.
Kellen let out a soft breath as Uncle Parker handed over their room key. He meant to give it to Kellen, but Rhys was the one who took it from him. A strange tension filled the air before it quickly dissipated but Kellen didn’t sit in it long enough to get a full grasp of what had happened. Sergei seemed to pick up on it and was smiling, while Brent, who had followed them down as Uncle Parker showed them around, smirked.
Kellen had no idea what was going on, or the power play that had happened, but he didn’t seem to care. He just watched as Rhys opened the door for them, taking them into a single floor unit that appeared to be well insulated. It had a decent kitchen, island seating like their own apartment, a smaller couch and the bedroom was off to the right instead of the left. It had a small powder room with just a toilet for the main room to use while the bedroom had its own three piece bathroom.
The bed was big enough for the two of them to lie in it, they had a dresser to put their things in, and the suitcases that his parents had brought were already in the bedroom as well.
Brent let out a whistle as he looked around the room before a smug look crossed his face.
"My room is bigger." He bragged and Kellen stared at him blankly.
"So? Does it matter when you can’t do anything?" Kellen asked, taking the wind out of his sails. Brent froze, Uncle Parker froze, and Rhys laughed loudly. Sergei sighed.
"Guide Kellen." Sergei muttered while shaking his head. "You aren’t supposed to point that out." He told him and Kellen stared at him in confusion.
"Brent himself told me that. I thought it was appropriate to point that out. He can barely go work out. What use is a large space if it’s just to contain him?" Kellen asked. Uncle Parker cleared his throat.
"That’s not fully fair to us, Kellen. It’s not as if we want to do this to Brent. He’s in danger and one of the Espers that works for his brother can teleport. We have to make sure that he is safe and tucked away. That means also limiting what he can do in and out of the Guild building because as much as we trust people who work for us, who is to say that someone can’t be swayed with money or influence?" Uncle Parker suggested.
Kellen knew that he was right, but still didn’t think this level of protection helped anyone.
"I’m here now to help, so I doubt others will bother Brent." Sergei said quietly, but with authority. Kellen was impressed while Brent looked at the man in surprise.
Kellen’s Uncle didn’t seem that impressed with Sergei’s words, while Rhys nodded.
"Agreed. And both Kellen and I are here as well. While Kellen’s visions have side effects he’s still adjusting to, we both can see the future. Kellen is set on a future where Brent is alive and so am I. We’ll make sure he’s safe." Rhys said. Kellen nodded while Uncle Parker glanced between everyone. It was clear he had some thoughts, but he was keeping them to himself.
"Understood. If you two want to remain here, you can. I will be showing Sergei his room now." Uncle Parker said while Brent gave him a confused look.
"Why does Sergei need a room? He can just stay with me." Brent said. Kellen didn’t react, but Sergei and Uncle Parker did.
Uncle Parker seemed confused and upset that Brent would even suggest something like that. While Sergei seemed a little stunned. You’d think that a man who had just been making out with the Guide would understand his intentions, but that didn’t appear to be the case.
"He’s a visiting S Class. He needs a specific space for his own sanity. We didn’t provide you with the room that you have now with that in mind." Uncle Parker told him. Brent blinked.
"Why wouldn’t you do that? Or why wouldn’t you move me once I told you who I was with?" Brent asked Uncle Parker and Kellen watched as Sergei went rigid. His eyes widened and his powers tinged his eyes. Rhys watched on, amusement on his face and Kellen wouldn’t lie and say he wasn’t amused as well.
Uncle Parker glanced at Sergei, who seemed shocked by Brent’s words and huffed.
"Were you not serious about Brent? Is this why you are so surprised right now?" Uncle Parker asked, protectiveness on full display as he questioned Sergei. Sergei shook his head as Brent turned to look at him, confusion in his expression.
Sergei looked like this was the last situation he wanted to be in. He was panicking at the direction this conversation had derailed into.
"Not serious? There has never been a moment I’ve been involved with Brent where I wasn’t." Sergei said solemnly, his eyes big. Brent stared at him, an emotion on his face that was hard for Kellen to place. It looked like confusion but there was also something else mixed into it. It looked a bit like anger, or humour, but Kellen wasn’t sure.
"I beg to differ." Brent said sharply, and Kellen could feel the weight behind his words. Sergei blinked, turning his attention towards Brent fully. His brows drew together and he stared at the other man in confusion.
"What do you mean by that? I thought I was always sincere and straightforward with you when it came to interacting with you. Did you...not feel the same?" Sergei asked and Brent snorted. He put his hand on his hip, glaring at the S Class.
"Always sincere and straightforward huh? Sergei, I wasn’t even aware that you had feelings for me even after I kissed you that first time." Kellen’s eyes went wide, as did Uncle Parker’s. Kellen could tell they were about to be involved in something that could be very dangerous to everyone involved. Rhys squeezed Kellen’s hand and when Kellen looked towards him he looked deeply amused.
Sergei looked shocked to hear Brent’s words.
"Who would allow someone to randomly kiss them? Outside of them working at their Guild?" Sergei asked and Brent clenched his teeth.
"I’m a Field Guide. Not only that, I’m a Field Guide who has worked with your Guild several times, Sergei. Anyone would get the wrong idea. Even Kellen would." Brent said, throwing Kellen into the drama. Kellen, who was Brent’s friend, would agree if it made sense. To Kellen, it did.
Kellen nodded, backing his friend up. Brent sighed in relief, gesturing wildly with his hand.
"And another thing, sure, we kissed, but you also take horrible care of yourself! Our first kiss wasn’t so much a kiss as it was an emergency guiding session! The only reason you’re in such good condition right now is because Kellen is damn good at his job." Brent said, stepping closer to Sergei and pressing his index finger into his chest. Sergei looked pale, more pale then usual and Brent huffed.
"Is that a bad thing? Should I have not let him?" Sergei asked and Kellen turned his head away from this, having to take a break from watching Sergei make a fool of himself. That was the wrong thing to say to a Field Guide, especially Brent of all people.
"What? No! Of course I want Kellen to do his damn job, the same way I would expect the same from any Field Guide in his position. The health of your body is more important than my petty emotions when they could put you in danger. Dumbass." Sergei looked absolutely flabbergasted. He’d clearly never been called a dumbass before, while Brent was well versed in calling others such names.
"D-Dumbass. I’m not dumb, Brent." Sergei said quietly and Uncle Parker piped up.
"So...separate rooms?" He asked carefully, maybe a little hopefully from how everything was blowing up. Brent snarled.
"Same room, Parker. Don’t suggest it again." Brent warned, his gaze flashing the sky blue of his powers. A clear sign that he’d been pushed too far. Kellen smirked.
Sergei looked like he was going to get chewed out while Uncle Parker looked crestfallen. Kellen found this whole situation amusing.
"Why don’t Brent and I spend some time together to cool off while Uncle Parker shows Sergei and Rhys Brent’s room? That way you can see if anything pops up, Rhys." Kellen said and Rhys picked up on it instantly.
"Of course, love. I can do that. We’ll give you two some time and be back in about...20 minutes? Enjoy yourselves." He quickly took over the situation, splitting Kellen and Brent from the others. He thought he was giving them some time to calm down. He was actually giving them time to scheme.
