Chapter 224 Release Date
Chapter 224 Release Date
4:50 AM, Xingchen Technology Data Center.
Eric stared at the three monitors in front of him. The left monitor displayed the server cluster status, with densely packed green dots; the middle monitor showed real-time traffic, with a flat, almost straight curve; and the right monitor showed the database connection count, which was currently only in the single digits—those were their internal test connections.
A glass of cold coffee sat beside him, and the ashtray was stuffed with seven or eight cigarette butts. He picked up the walkie-talkie: "Final confirmation for each group."
Voices came through the walkie-talkie one after another:
"Load balancing group in place, DNS switchover complete, backup line ready."
"Database group in place, master-slave synchronization normal, backup time point locked."
"Download server group is in place, global CDN nodes are warmed up, and StarCraft client image synchronization rate is 100%."
"The payment gateway group is in place and has passed testing with the three bank channels."
"Security team in place, DDoS protection enabled, abnormal traffic monitoring started."
Eric glanced at Ling Yun, who was sitting at the other end of the room. Ling Yun wasn't looking at the screen; he was flipping through a paper notebook containing his handwritten drafts of the ladder algorithm logic. Seemingly sensing Eric's gaze, he looked up and nodded.
"Let's begin," Eric said.
It was exactly 5:00 AM.
The technical supervisor entered the last command in the console and pressed Enter.
On the server status graph, the indicator lights for the three master nodes representing North America, Europe, and Asia changed from yellow (standby) to green (running), and the traffic monitoring curve began to show a barely perceptible fluctuation.
The Starry Sky Games platform has officially launched.
For the first few minutes, everything was calm. Only a few testers and internal staff who had prior knowledge of the situation logged in.
Eric refreshed the backend data:
Platform registered users: 127
Simultaneous online count: 89
Current download task: 3 (StarCraft client)
Number of players waiting in the ranked matchmaking queue: 0
"It's too early," he said to Lingyun.
"Wait until dawn." Ling Yun closed his notebook, stood up, walked to the coffee machine, and poured himself another cup.
7:00 AM, Irvine, California, Blizzard employee dormitory.
Blizzard tester Daniel was woken up by his alarm clock. He was off today, but he set an early alarm so he could be among the first to experience the StarCraft gaming platform. As an employee of a partner company, he had received a test account in advance, but he wanted to try it out as a regular player when it officially launched.
He got up and sat down at the computer. The computer was running the Starry Sky operating system. He double-clicked the platform client icon on the desktop, which he had downloaded the night before.
The startup screen is dark blue, with the Starry Sky logo rotating and appearing, and a line of small text below: "Connecting..."
Three seconds later, the interface loads. The left side is the navigation bar: Shop, Library, Community, and Ranked. The middle section features a banner ad, currently displaying a large image of StarCraft, with "Buy Now" and "Enter Game" buttons next to it. The right side shows the friends list and notification area, which are currently empty.
Daniel logged in with his pre-registered account. The platform automatically detected that StarCraft was already installed on his computer, so the game icon appeared in his library. He clicked the icon, and a launch option popped up: Launch Game, Verify Files, View Achievements.
He clicked "Start Game".
The game seemed to start a little faster than before. After entering the main menu, he noticed a new button: "Ranked Match," which he clicked.
Daniel selected 1v1, the map was randomized, and clicked "Start Matchmaking".
System notification: "Looking for an opponent of similar strength... Estimated waiting time: <1 minute."
After waiting for thirty seconds, "Match successful! Opponent: ZergRush. Map: Lost Temple. Click to prepare for the game."
Daniel clicks "Ready". Game loads.
Five minutes later, he won. His opponent was clearly a newbie; he even got the starting building order wrong.
The match has ended, and you are back on the platform interface. A results window will pop up:
"Victory! Ladder rating change: 1500 → 1521 (+21)"
Performance rating for this match: A (Operational efficiency higher than 80% of players in the same skill level)
"Achievement unlocked: First win!"
Experience points gained: 150 (Platform level increased to level 2)
There are also two share buttons at the bottom of the window: "Share to Star Language Updates" and "Copy Battle Records Link".
Daniel didn't share and closed the window. He saw that his ladder points had become 1521, and his ranking had changed from "Unranked" to "412th".
"More than four hundred people finished fighting so quickly?" He was a little surprised.
He opened the leaderboard and refreshed it. The leaderboard already showed the top 100 players. The number one player had 1788 points and the ID was "QuickSilver". Among the top ten, he saw several familiar IDs; they were all well-known experts on Battle.net.
"Looks like all the experts have arrived." Daniel clicked "Play another round."
At 7:30, the number of users online simultaneously on the platform exceeded 3000.
Eight o'clock in the morning, Xingchen Technology Marketing Department.
On the screen in front of Marketing Director Carly, the real-time sales dial began to tick.
Star Shield USB flash drive (including games) cumulative sales: 18,432 units
Sales in the past hour: 127 units
"The growth rate is accelerating," she said to the data analyst next to her.
"That's normal. It's almost noon on the East Coast, and the West Coast is just getting up." The analyst pointed to another screen. "Look at the payment channel distribution: credit cards account for 85%, PayPal for 12%, and others for 3%. The refund rate... is currently 0.7%, lower than the e-commerce average."
"User source?"
"North America accounts for 62%, South Korea 21%, Europe 12%, and other countries 5%. South Korea's percentage is higher than expected, possibly due to their professional players and esports atmosphere."
"What about the platform's download numbers?"
"The platform client has been downloaded more than 50,000 times. Most of them are Windows users—they are downloading the game from the platform but haven't decided whether to buy the StarShield USB drive yet."
Carly nodded: "Continue monitoring, focusing on the feedback from the first batch of users after they enter the clean server. What about the public opinion team?"
"We're already scraping data from forums, IRC, and news comments. Initially, positive reviews focus on 'fast matching,' 'simple interface,' and 'an interesting ranking system.' Negative reviews mainly mention 'expensive' and 'the inconvenience of having to use a USB drive.'"
"As expected. We will increase the promotion of 'pure competition with no cheating.' We will contact our partner game media to arrange interviews and test reports."
"clear."
