Chapter 36 Seeking Compensation
Chapter 36 Seeking Compensation
"Young lady, could you spare a few plums for me?" A young woman carrying a child approached Wen Yuxia, who was distributing plums to her family, and asked.
Wen Yuxia put the remaining plums from her handbag into her spatial storage, shook her head expressionlessly, and then handed the handbag to the young woman.
She said regretfully, "It's all been distributed, sister-in-law. You can go to the top of the mountain and take a look; there were still quite a few plums hanging on the trees when I left."
The young woman's eyes darted around quickly, finally settling on Gou Shi. Of everyone present, only Gou Shi still had two bright yellow plums in her hand.
The young woman said with an awkward smile, "Sister-in-law, could you give me one of the plums you have?"
Of all the women, Gou was the gentlest and most doting on her children. She ate one of the sweet, juicy wild plums but couldn't bear to eat the rest; the wild plum she held in her hand was for her son, Tiedan.
"I...I...I don't have any left either," Gou Shi stammered for a long time before finally coming up with a solution, directly stuffing the plums into Tie Dan's hand.
Tie Dan had just finished his portion when Gou Shi stuffed two more plums into his mouth. Hearing the young woman next to him want some, he quickly popped them into his mouth, took a bite out of each plum, and grinned, saying, "I've already eaten."
"Mom, I'm hungry," the child in the young woman's arms said weakly.
"Flower is hungry, Mother will get you some food," the young woman said, putting the girl down on the ground and then squatting down beside two earthenware pots with a clear purpose.
She pulled a large bowl from her bosom, picked up a spoon, and began scooping food into the earthenware pot. The woman's actions stunned the Wang family and Wen Yunhong.
They stared blankly at the woman, wondering why she was scooping up their porridge.
Wen Yuxia gave a cold laugh in anger, took two steps forward, snatched the spoon from the woman's hand, and dragged her out, cursing, "Get out! If you dare come any closer, I'll break your legs!"
Wang Wu rushed over to help, pulling the little girl off their property and yelling at the young woman, "Shameless!"
"Shameless! Can you eat or drink your face? In these times, as long as there's food, I'd give up my life for anything, let alone my dignity. Auntie, please, have mercy and give my mother and me something to eat..."
The young woman refused to leave and tried to break through the Wang family members to grab the porridge from the earthenware pot. Luo and the woman got into a fight.
"Grandpa, Grandma, Dad... Help! They... they're hitting Mom! Waaah!" the little girl cried as she ran towards the group of people.
"Who dares to hit my wife? Don't they want to live?"
"Damn it! My daughter-in-law is such a virtuous person, and someone actually tried to hit her! I'll fight you to the death!"
"Village chief, someone is bullying my mother!"
……
Not far from Wen Yuxia and her group's camp, about a hundred people were resting; they appeared to be from the same village.
A burly man brandishing a broadsword charged forward, followed by an old woman and children cursing and yelling, along with villagers who came to watch and help. A large crowd quickly surrounded Wen Yuxia and her companions.
When the old woman and several women came forward, Wen Yuxia had already helped Luo Shi up. The old woman asked the young woman lying on the ground with concern, "Hua'er's mother, are you alright?"
"Mother, I... I twisted my back, it hurts so much, I... I can't stand up, waah... what should I do? How am I going to travel now..." The young woman covered her face and cried heartbrokenly.
The old woman glared angrily at Wang Wushi and shouted, "You injured my daughter-in-law, you must pay compensation! No, besides money, you also need to compensate us with two bags of grain!"
“Dream on,” Wang Wushi said coldly.
The two were arguing back and forth, when a deep, aged voice rang out from outside the crowd: "Make way, let this old man pass."
The villagers who were watching recognized the voice as their village chief's arrival, and they pushed aside to let him walk to the front.
The old man was probably around sixty years old. His gaze swept over the members of the Wang family, finally settling on the two oldest men, Wang Ping and Wang An.
"My surname is Zhu, and I am the village chief of Zhu Family Village. May I ask you two gentlemen which village you are from?" Village Chief Zhu's questioning was quite skillful.
This question not only reveals which village Wang Ping and his group are from, but also whether they are traveling alone or with other villagers.
He had already seen Zhu Sanniang, the old woman's daughter-in-law Zhu Daishi, coming to Wang Ping and his group with her daughter to cause trouble.
It seems Zhu Sanniang's family has suffered a slight loss, and it's time for him, the village chief, to step in and protect the villagers' interests. If Wang Ping and his group get separated from the villagers and travel alone, he must make them agree to Zhu Sanniang's demands today.
If the villagers of Wangping are nearby, the way to handle the matter depends on how many villagers accompanied Wangping.
Wang Ping narrowed his eyes. He could guess pretty much what the village chief of Zhu Family Village was thinking: no way they could bully them.
"My name is Wang Ping, from Xiaowang Village. Xiaowang Village, Lijia Village, and Dawan Village are traveling together, led by Village Chief Yang."
Upon hearing this, Village Chief Zhu wondered how many villagers from the three villages were resting along this narrow path, and how many of them were traveling with Wang Ping and his group.
Zhujia Village alone could not possibly defeat the villagers of three villages, but whether Wang Ping was telling the truth or not remained to be seen.
Village Chief Zhu coughed twice to clear his throat, then said in a hoarse voice, "Brother Wang, some people from our village were injured by your family members. What do you think we should do about it?"
"How do you want to handle this?" Wang Ping retorted.
Village Chief Zhu chuckled and said, "Brother Wang, if someone is injured, compensation must be paid. How about this, you give me five catties of grain as compensation, and I'll have the villagers stop here."
"People from your village came to my house, forcibly took porridge from my house, and now they want compensation? I'd like to ask Village Chief Zhu, is your village a village of robbers? Can people from your village just rob other people's things?" Wang Ping shouted.
With eight sons, three nephews, and his granddaughter Wen Yuxia, who possessed exceptional martial arts skills, Wang Ping wasn't afraid of conflict with Zhu Family Village.
Wang Dazhu and his brothers, armed with hoes and sharpened wooden sticks, glared sharply at the surrounding crowd, looking ready to fight at any moment.
Village Chief Zhu's face darkened. He raised his right hand and waved it, and the surrounding villagers instantly retreated. Twenty burly men wielding large knives quickly appeared behind Village Chief Zhu.
Village Chief Zhu chuckled coldly and said, "Brother Wang, it seems your village isn't united. No one's come to help you right now."
