Chapter 77 Physical Training
Chapter 77 Physical Training
When Wen Yunhai and Wen Yunqing returned home from school, they were unaware that because of a single sentence from Wen Dashan, for the next two years, Wen Yuxia would forcefully arrange for them to do various sports whenever they had free time.
The group entered the courtyard laughing and joking, only to hear Wen Yuxia's cool voice as she lay on a chair with her eyes closed, resting: "Eldest cousin, third cousin, put down your books and run five laps around the vegetable garden in the backyard. Hong'er, you're in charge of supervising. No food until you finish."
Wen Yunhai said with a bitter face, "Da Ya, the teacher assigned a lot of homework today, can we not run?"
"Six laps," Wen Yuxia said coldly.
Seeing that her older cousin was being asked to run six laps, Wen Yunqing didn't dare to make a sound. She obediently put down her book bag and ran to the backyard, calling out, "Hong'er, come quickly!"
Afraid that saying another word would mean running another lap, Wen Yunhai kept his lips tightly shut and followed Wen Yunqing towards the backyard. He was very puzzled, unable to understand why the usually cheerful Wen Yuxia would be making them run with such a cold face.
"Nan Yi, tell Aunt Lu to give Young Master Hai and Young Master Qing an extra meal tonight. Stew an old hen with bamboo fungus for them. And, take this ginseng root and add it to the chicken soup."
Watching Wen Yunhong and the other two head towards the backyard, Wen Yuxia smiled brightly and instructed Nan Yi to take the ginseng rootlets to the kitchen.
Wen Yuxia instructed Bei Yi to set out dinner for her and her brother, as well as Fu Bao, in the backyard. The three of them ate dinner while watching Wen Yunhai and his brother jog.
"Too weak, he's already out of breath after only three laps," Fu Bao commented, stuffing a piece of braised pork into his mouth and shaking his head as he chewed.
After all, they were brothers. Fu Bao said they were both weak, which made Wen Yunhong very unhappy. But seeing his two brothers jogging slowly while holding their backs, Wen Yunhong felt that Fu Bao was right.
Finally, Wen Yunhong said helplessly, "They're too idle usually, they need to practice more in the future."
After running five laps, Wen Yunqing collapsed to the ground, motionless, her gaze following Wen Yunhai, who continued jogging slowly. She was secretly relieved that he hadn't spoken; now she only needed to run five more laps.
"Nan Yi, go help Young Master Qing," Wen Yuxia said coldly.
“Yes,” Nan Yi said in a loud voice.
Before learning martial arts, Nan Yi had also trained his physical fitness. He knew that after running, he couldn't lie down; he had to walk slowly for a while and then relax his leg muscles.
After completing their running task, the two took a shower and shared a bowl of chicken soup in the kitchen. Wen Yunhai ate while saying, "It's not fair. Why are we being punished by having to run?"
"Exactly, Da Ya even had someone set out a meal there. Heaven knows how tempted I was when I saw Fu Bao eating piece after piece of braised pork," Wen Yunqing added, taking a sip of chicken soup.
“You two still have the nerve to say that,” Nan Yi couldn’t help but interject, “Miss has her reasons for punishing you.”
"Hmph, what do you know?" Nan Yi was just a servant of the Wen family; what right did she have to lecture him? Wen Yunhai muttered defiantly.
As soon as Wen Yuxia entered the kitchen, she laughed upon hearing this. "What does Nan Yi know? He knows martial arts, do you? He can scale walls and roofs, can you? He dares to go into the mountains to hunt wild boars, do you dare?"
"We can write and do math, can he?" Wen Yunhai retorted, unconvinced.
Wen Yunhai had never seen Nan Yi read or write, so he assumed Nan Yi was illiterate and wanted to use his ability to write and calculate to make fun of him.
Unexpectedly, the members of the guard had been learning to read and write since childhood, and Nan Yi was the most diligent student among them. At this moment, without Wen Yuxia even having to speak, Nan Yi proudly said, "I could write and do arithmetic when I was seven years old."
"Liar," Wen Yunhai's face was full of disbelief.
Nan Yi asked respectfully, "Miss, may I use paper and pen?"
"Okay," Wen Yuxia said, telling Bei Yi to go to the study to get paper and pen.
In the courtyard, a sheet of Xuan paper was spread out on the stone table. Nan Yi concentrated and wrote: "Born a servant of my master, die a genius of my master."
The fourteen large characters were written with vigorous strength, not at all like the handwriting of a ten-year-old child. Wen Yunhai and Wen Yunqing remained silent after looking at them; the writing was slightly better than theirs.
Wen Yuxia smiled and said, "My two cousins, how about you have a math contest with Nan Yi?"
"No," Wen Yunhai and Wen Yunqing refused in unison.
Are you kidding me? It's one thing if my handwriting is slightly better than theirs, but if I also crush them in math, where would they put their faces?
"If you don't want to compete, then behave yourself. After dinner, go back to your room and do your homework. Tomorrow morning, do fifty push-ups and fifty sit-ups before going to school," Wen Yuxia said, arms crossed.
"What the heck are push-ups? And what are sit-ups?" Wen Yunhai and his brother looked at Wen Yuxia with complete bewilderment.
Wen Yuxia calmly said, "You'll find out tomorrow morning." She had already told Wen Yunhong that she would demonstrate for the two of them tomorrow morning.
"Oh, then I'll go back to my room to do my homework," Wen Yunhai said, rubbing his sore thighs as he headed towards his study.
Wen Yunqing said listlessly, "I'll go too." The teacher gave us a topic today, requiring us to write two thousand words, and he only wrote five hundred. Sigh, it looks like I'll have to stay up all night tonight.
In the days that followed, the Wen brothers got up early every day to do push-ups and sit-ups, and before dinner they still ran five laps around the yard. Wen Yunhong was still in charge of supervising them.
As for Wen Yuxia, she is considering what kind of exercise equipment to make to increase the training intensity for Wen Yunhai and others.
Only two of the livestock sheds in the backyard were left; the other thirteen were all demolished by Lu Zhigang and his son. Wen Yuxia planned to build a training ground in the same style as that open space.
The course includes a balance beam, obstacle courses, and rope ladder climbing – these three activities are combined into one. Archery and pitch-pot are also necessary, and dumbbells are essential for strength training, so dumbbells should also be readily available.
Wen Yuxia walked back and forth on the open space several times, dividing it into two sections: one for physical training and the other for shooting practice.
Back in her room, Wen Yuxia flashed into her spatial dimension and reappeared inside. She now held several blueprints in her hand. She opened the door and called out, "Bei Yi!"
"What are your orders, Miss?" Bei Yi replied.
Wen Yuxia handed her the blueprints, "Have Lao Lu go with you and get it back as soon as possible."
Bei Yi took the blueprints, glanced at the markings, and said respectfully, "Yes, Miss, I'll take care of it right away."
Two weeks later, the log bridge, obstacle courses, and rope ladders were in place, and the bows, targets, and pitch-pot equipment at the shooting range were also in their respective positions.
Wen Yuxia sent Lu Zhigang to Xinghua Village. After arriving in Xinghua Village, Lu Zhigang went straight to Wen Dashan's house. "Master Wen, my young lady said that all the young masters who are farming at home should return to the city with me. When the young masters who are studying are on leave, I would like to trouble you to send them to the county town."
Upon hearing this, Wen Dashan knew that Wen Yuxia had already prepared sports equipment for her grandchildren, and he chuckled as he asked Lin to call over the children who were farming at home.
