Chapter 90 Lively Plants
Chapter 90 Lively Plants
Throughout the rest of the journey, Lei Xiu would stay by Mao Qiu's side to ensure Le Zhi's safety, a tacit understanding among everyone in the team.
The cubs and pre-adolescent members of the tribe are surrounded by the adolescent and adult members of the tribe in the middle of the group. Each person has a corresponding supervisor who will react quickly when necessary.
The procession of nearly a hundred people took to the air, creating a rather impressive sight, especially with the enormous bird-beast, Maoqiu, also in the group. Positioned at the rear of the procession, Maoqiu easily kept up with the speed of the tree spirits, allowing it to fly very smoothly.
Having already changed into long sleeves and trousers, Lezhi tied her messy hair back up, then lowered her body and lay prone on Maoqiu's back to avoid the chilly morning breeze.
He also kept a fur blanket in his space, so he could take it out to keep warm when he felt cold. The clothes he was wearing and the blanket were all made for him by Lei Xiu; otherwise, Le Zhi wouldn't have thought to prepare these things, as his attention was entirely focused on the food.
Flying within a group allows for leveraging of momentum. The leader rotates with the tribespeople regularly, so if you're in a hurry, you can fly all day and only need to stop in the evening to find a place to spend the night. This is the most efficient way to travel, but you'll miss lunch and it requires more physical strength and endurance.
However, they didn't need to rush this time; they could proceed at their normal pace, as they had plenty of time. Therefore, after flying for half a day, Leshan realized they had arrived at the designated rest stop and signaled to the group to begin landing.
The first place to rest was a flat area next to a stream. Since there was no need to stay overnight, everyone simply made some simple preparations, built the necessary fire pit, and started preparing lunch.
Located deep in the Yunmeng Forest, this place is teeming with prey. The first meal is far from the point where we need to deplete our reserves, so after leaving enough people in the team to protect and patrol, the rest of the team went into the forest to hunt under Leshan's command.
After exchanging glances with Maoqiu, Lei Xiu set off with the hunting team, while Maoqiu tacitly stayed by Lezhi's side. Once back in the forest, Maoqiu reverted to its wary demeanor from when they first met.
As the one being protected, Lezhi understood Maoqiu's feelings very well, so he tried to keep his distance from Maoqiu and helped Leyou with some things he could, such as watching the fire.
Adding the firewood that Leyou and the others brought back to the fire pit, Lezhi saw that the flames were almost burning, so she started rummaging through her spatial storage to take out some pre-prepared seasonings and placed them next to her for easy access later.
Meanwhile, Leyou and his friends went to the nearby woods to gather firewood and collect some edible plants. Lezhi, being watched closely by Maoqiu, boredly poked at the crackling flames, wondering what he could do.
Back deep in the Cloud Dream Forest, Lezhi was no longer in danger of survival and could finally focus on appreciating the feeling his surroundings gave him. He wondered if it was just his imagination, but being in the forest seemed more comfortable than when he was in his tribe.
When he calmed down, he seemed to be able to feel the rhythm of the forest's breathing. The vitality permeating the forest also seemed to be attracted by the joy. If someone could see the growth patterns of the plants, they would find that the plants seemed to change their growth direction in an instant, and their goal changed from aimless to growing towards the joy.
The change in direction of the leaf veins was subtle; they were doing their best, just wanting to get a little closer to Lezhi.
Unfortunately, the plants' growth rate is limited and cannot be accelerated overnight, so this anomaly did not cause much of a commotion.
The forest was teeming with insectoid creatures, and the hunting parties easily obtained their prey, returning in twos and threes. Lei Xiu was among the first to return, and together they placed the prey by the stream, handing it over to the tribespeople who had been waiting there to process it. After quickly cleaning the prey with the stream water, Lei Xiu strode over and sat down next to Le Zhi.
"Zhizhi, here you go." Lei Xiu magically produced a handful of brightly colored berries from his spatial storage and handed them to Lezhi, gesturing for her to eat them with his eyes.
Having gotten used to being fed, Lezhi didn't refuse. He really didn't have anything to do at the moment. These berries looked very fresh, probably just picked recently, and the flavor compounds hadn't dissipated much yet, making them very sweet.
Picking up a berry and putting it in her mouth, the sweet juice burst forth, instantly awakening Lezhi's taste buds. "Mmm, delicious. Did you pick this while you were hunting?"
"Hmm." Seeing Lezhi eating with a beaming smile, Lei Xiu's brows relaxed, completely losing the cold, murderous intent he had shown when hunting.
Lei Xiu sat down next to Le Zhi, and just stretched out his palm, letting Le Zhi use his hand as a tray to pick up berries from his palm one by one and eat them. Neither of them felt that this action was wrong, which was obviously because they often interacted like this.
After finishing the handful of berries in Lei Xiu's hand, she shook her head and refused Lei Xiu's attempt to feed her more. "I'm not eating anymore. We're about to eat. Don't eat too much fruit before meals. Let's eat it after the meal."
Nodding, Lei Xiu stopped taking out the fruit, turned and took the dry branch from Le Zhi's hand, taking over the task of tending the fire pit from Le Zhi.
By this time, the tribespeople responsible for butchering the prey had completed part of the work. Leyou and his companions went to help, but were sent back by the tribespeople. Feeding the cubs first was a custom of all tribes, so Lezhi and his group were the first to start cooking. When the first wave of roasted meat aroma spread throughout the camp, all the tribespeople were already seated by their own fire pits, waiting for the food to cook.
Today's weather was deliberately chosen; it was sunny and breezy, with a few wisps of clouds shielding us from the intense midday sun. After lunch, everyone rested briefly in the gentle breeze before taking flight again at Leshan's invitation to continue our journey.
The most comfortable one was undoubtedly Lezhi, who didn't need to fly himself; he was the kind of person who would get sleepy after eating. After being woken up from his afternoon nap by Lei Xiu, Lezhi mustered his energy and climbed onto Maoqiu's back. Lei Xiu, with great foresight, had draped a blanket over Lezhi beforehand, and then let Maoqiu take off.
Sure enough, not long after they set off, Lezhi sank into the thick fur on Maoqiu's back, wrapped in a blanket, and fell into a deep sleep in the mild afternoon weather.
Lei Xiu, who had been protecting Mao Qiu, was the first to notice that Le Zhi had fallen asleep. He focused his attention on Le Zhi, keeping a close eye on her every move. Taking care of her had become second nature to him.
The advantage of a large group is that almost no enemy dares to provoke it. If it is alone, it will inevitably encounter all kinds of blind insects. However, insects also have brains. When they see such a large group, their first instinct is to avoid it.
So the rest of the journey was relatively peaceful.
After sleeping for two hours, Lezhi slowly woke up. The sunlight was no longer so harsh, and the breeze was just right. Lezhi sat up blankly from the bedding and stared at the distant sky in a daze.
Upon discovering that Lezhi had awakened, Lei Xiu changed the amplitude of his wings, turned around and landed slowly beside Lezhi, stopping in a cool and neat pose with one knee on the ground.
"Zhizhi, you're awake. Is there anything you'd like to eat?"
Attracted by Lei Xiu's landing posture, Le Zhi blinked, and after a long while slowly shook her head, her confused eyes clearly not yet fully awake.
Lei Xiu, who was being stared at by Le Zhi, raised an eyebrow, reached out to tidy Le Zhi's hair, and then stuffed a vine basket filled with fresh berries into Le Zhi's hands.
"Okay, then eat when you want. Call me if you need anything, I'll be right here." Although the fur ball has now accepted Lei Xiu, it still can't stand having him stay on its back for too long.
Lei Xiu understood this as well, so before the fur ball could burst into flames, Lei Xiu quickly gave Le Zhi some instructions, then ruffled Le Zhi's hair before spreading his wings and flying away from the fur ball's back.
